collembase

Protocol

Many Collembola (springtails) are very easy to culture. All one needs is a pot (e.g. a glass jar) with a plaster of Paris bottom to control humidity. For white species, like Folsomia candida , it is recommended to stain the plaster with charchoal or ink. Folsomia candida can be fed baker's yeast (e.g. Dr. Oetker), mushrooms or fish food. When rearing Orchesella cincta, twigs overgrown with algae should be put in the pot. The springtails will eat the algae from the twigs.
